This copy being number sixty one.A fascinating and original biography of John Wilkes, looking at the politician's life history and relations. The title of this work stems from a pornographical poem Wilkes wrote with Thomas Potter on the courtesan Fanny Murray, being a parody of Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man. The poem ended up being read in the House of Lords and was declared obscene and blasphemous, causing a great scandal. Due to it, Wilkes was declared an outlaw in 1764. Interestingly, he was known to be the ugliest man in England. This copy being a record of a fascinating life. This volume is profusely illustrated throughout facsimile letters and manuscripts and plenty other illustrations in text. CONDITION Two volumes, one in the original publisher's quarter cloth binding over marbled boards, and the other in the original publisher's decorative paper wraps. Externally, lovely with only minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with various illustrations in text throughout and facsimile letters and manuscripts.
