1970s Vintage Mid Century Laurel esque Champagne Glass Chrome Floor Lamp

Description: This 70s chrome floor lamp employs the quintessential tulip and mushroom motifs used throughout the MCM period by the Laurel Lamp Company. Operating via a three-way switch, the hand blown, sandblasted glass shade emits a soft, full moon like light. A standardized E26 socket ensures you can change the lightbulb to however warm, cold, or even colored to your liking. It is in excellent condition, except for a few stains on the chrome base.In our modern zeitgiest we attribute the mushroom & tulip shaped lamps to the Laurel Lamp Company, but Laurel owes almost all of it’s contemporary reverence to the American designer, veteran, and creator of the now defunct Design Line, Bill Curry. A Los Angeles Art Center graduate, credited with “developing the first ‘total look’ lamp forms – eliminating the base-bulb-shade concept and instead exploiting the bare bulb in a playful, self-contained” light unit. Based in California, Curry filed patent D199141, in March 1963 for his iconic ‘mushroom lamp’, then called Stemlite-- it was an immediate hit, and West-Coast consumers couldn’t get enough. Word of his designs soon reached the East Coast, and in 1965 New Jersey based, Laurel Lamp Company, released a collection of imitation lamps ‘designed’ by Richard Barr. Curry, subsequently filed two lawsuits to enforce his patent rights for Stemlite, both of which were dismissed. This gave way for many copy-cat lamps inspired by Bill Curry’s intellectual property, such as this one, available for purchase, to exist on the market.
