Description: Vintage 1950's-1960's Couture Black Bombshell Wiggle DressFully Lined, Possibly Never Worn - Beatiful! Note: Photos do not do it justice - they are purposefully lightened in order to allow the construction details to show on this solid black dress body. It was designed to be form-fitting and is fitting/showing loosely on the mannequin I have. Please view all photos in zoom and study all the details of construction to appreciate. Gorgeous cap sleeve fitted black wiggle dress with stunning contrasting copper colored satin bodice and back sashing/bow details on a plunging back neckline. Just as gorgeous from the back......heads will follow, mouths will drop when you walk away! The low V back accents the bow and long sashing tail detailing to split across the derriere and hangs to almost the hemline. The front neckline is an open V that is squashed a bit at the V by the copper satin sash detail that lays across the upper bust. The detailing is a layered effect sewn into the dress, but it is open from the bottom (you could put your fingers up into it from the bottom, it is not an insert piece). This allows for it to lay across from the bust on the straight to further emphasize the bust. Darting and princess seamed panels through the bodice and waist sides make this a form fitting wiggle dress. It is fully lined and has slip/bra strap carriers installed with snaps inside the neckline to hole them out of view. I believe this to have been a custom, or couture made dress as per the provenance I received, it was not uncommon for the original owner to have done so. It is not labeled by maker, fabric content, or size. It feels to be a good body rayon crepe with heavy-bodied satin detailing, an acetate lining, and a metal zipper. It closes up the center back from below the hips to the base of the plunging V-neckline with a 17" zipper. From studying the bow and tails on the back, I think they could be removed if desired, as they are tacked on one side and lay over the zipper, then close by hook 'n eye on the other side of the zipper top. The copper satin detailing of the bodice, however, is seamed into the gown on the top edge side around to the back and would not be removable. This dress was paper drycleaner bag covered on a metal hanger and still had/has an alteration tag for having the hemline shortened many years ago. The seamstress' chalk marks are still evident on the hem inside. I am not sure if it was ever actually worn..... before or after the alteration and I find it to be in wonderful condition! I purchased this dress from an 85-year-old local woman as part of a lot, who had kept many of her mother's clothes from their prime NYC living era. She told me her mom did not sew, had many dresses made for her, and they lived a quite prominent social life in New York City in the hey-dey years after WWII thru the 1960's. This dress is the best condition dress of the lot I purchased, which further gives me cause to think that it may not have been worn, or worn only a time or two at best..... unlike most of the other dresses in the lot that had obviously been worn and put away without drycleaning or attention. Best Fit: Small to Medium by measurements taken. I think the original owner probably had close to a 37-27-35 figure. Measurements: Taken with dress inside out and based on the lining excluding seam allowances. One side only, flat, and with dress zipped fully closed. See all pics in zoom for your best close-up study of the construction detailing and measurements. I took photos in natural sunlight and purposefully kept them light so you can see the details as the dress is black, and details don't show well on really black items. Shoulder to shoulder - 16" (slightly wide)Pit to pit / Bust - 17" (measured flat over darts, add additional 4" to allow for max bust fullness)Waist - 14"Armhole - 8" (where set into bodice front/back)Sleeve arm opening - 6" (at hem edge)Waist - 14"Hips - 18"Sweep - 20" (at hem edge straight across front with small kickpleat folded closed)Shoulder top to hem length - 40" (after alteration)Zipper - 17" (back center zip opens to just below hips) Condition: IMO very good to excellent. I did not find any noteworthy faults to report. Do remind yourself that this is a vintage dress that is around 65 years old. Age is age.... materials age. It may not wear like a new garment, or you may find a broken stitch or some very minor flaws that went unnoticed. I looked it over, I believe, quite well as I was handling, measuring, and photographing, and I believe the fabric integrity to remain very nice and I found no rot. I cannot say what it will do when stress is applied if worn..... some old stitching may break. It is the risk you take for loving authentic vintage fabric and fashion! Compare measurements to a dress that fits you well if you plan to wear it and be sure of your purchase as I do not take returns. Colors may vary from one monitor to the next, but I try to describe them as accurately as possible. Please message me with any questions or for additional photos. I'm happy to help!
