1948 Swell Sport Thrills #5 "3 Strikes not Out!" SGC Tommy Henrich NY Yankees

Description: 1948 Swell Sport Thrills card #5 - "Three Strikes Not Out!" featuring Tommy Heinrich of the New York Yankees during the 1941 World Series Game #4. With a full count and two outs in the top of the 9th inning and the Brooklyn Dodgers ahead 4-3, Heinrich swung and missed but the ball got away from Brooklyn Dodger catcher Mickey Owen allowing Heinrich to reach base. The Yankees went on to score 4 runs to win Game #4 7-4. The later won the World Series 4 games to 1. SGC graded this card as "Authentic" with evidence of trimming. I purchased this card raw and sent it in to SGC for authentication. The 1948 Swell Bubble Gum Sport Thrills baseball set is comprised of 20 cards, each measuring approximately 2-7/16” by 3”. Produced by the Philadelphia Gum Company, the set honors the National Pastime’s most thrilling moments up to the post-war world. The cards have a black-and-white image framed with a baseball-themed border, the title “Sports Thrills Highlights in the World of Sport” at the top of the card, and the title of the card along the bottom. The backs give the story of the event pictured on the front. Most also promote Bob Feller’s then-recently printed “How to Pitch” book. The set is anchored by Dramatic Debut: Jackie Robinson ROY (#3), Most Dramatic Homer: Babe Ruth Points (#12), Great Slugging: Lou Gehrig’s Four Homers (#14), and Three Run Homer in Ninth: Ted Williams’ Homer (#16). Card #s 9, 11, 16, and 20 are more difficult to obtain than the other cards in this set, although the entire set is a challenge to secure in high grades due to their unusual sizes, resulting in many being found with folds or wrinkles along the edges. Thomas David Henrich (February 20, 1913 - December 1, 2009) signed with the New York Yankees in 1937, after Commissioner Judges Kennesaw Mountain Landis made him a free agent due to the Cleveland Indians virtually “hiding” him in the minor leagues for nearly four seasons. In New York, he joined one of the best hitting outfields in baseball history alongside Joe DiMaggio and Charlie Keller. He played his entire career with the New York Yankees “Bronx Bombers” (1937-1942, 1946-1950). From 1937-1950, Tommy Henrich helped New York win eight American League pennants and seven World Series titles, though he only appeared in four postseasons. Henrich enjoyed three seasons hitting over the .300-mark, had seven seasons with 115 hits or more and four seasons with 100 or more runs. The five-time All Star selection had a breakout year in 1941 when he clouted 31 home runs, hit for a .277 average adding 149 hits with 85 RBI. Yankees broadcaster nicknamed Henrich “Old Reliable” for his uncanny knack for clutch hitting. Tommy Henrich ended his career with 1,297 hits, 901 runs, 183 home runs and 795 RBI. Henrich retired and coached the Yankees, Giants and Tigers before becoming a color commentator for ABC in 1965.
