New torpedo designs were necessitated by the new technique of launching torpedos from aircraft. Since 1943, experts have launched more than 3000 torpedos into the water from a 300-foot launcher, to solve some of the problems of hydrodynamics, a Field about which very little had been known. Smaller caliber missiles are also tested. In the laboratory, high-speed cameras record the action of missiles of every conceivable shape when fired into water. Mush progress has been made, and a new launcher to fire torpedos into water from every possible angle, is now under construction. These photos show highlights of work being done at the base. A steel ball revolving at 120 revolutions per minute plunges into a test water tank. The perfect sphere leaves a wake pf corkscrew design. Photos like this yield valuable hydrodynamic data. Photo measures 7.25 x 9 inches. Photo Is dated 1948. PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: nei39339 Sell Smarter with Kyozou.Inventory and Ecommerce Management
