The 1948 MLB All-Star Game was held at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, home of the National League’s St. Louis Cardinals and the American League’s St. Louis Browns, on July 13, 1948. It appeared the National League had a distinct advantage this year, as Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and George Kell were unable to start due to injuries and allowed only pinch-hitting duties. The American League lineup did, however, possess a couple of future Hall of Famers in Cleveland Indians Lou Boudreau (SS) and Joe Gordon (2B) as well as Detroit Tiger Pat Mullin (RF) and Hoot Evers (CF), New York Yankees George McQuinn (1B) and left fielder Tommy Henrich, Philadelphia Athletics Buddy Rosar (C), Cleveland Indians Ken Keltner and Washington Senators starting pitcher Walt Masterson. Future Hall of Famers Richie Ashburn (CF) of the Philadelphia Phillies, Red Schoendienst (2B), Enos Slaughter (RF) and Stan Musial (LF) of the St. Louis Cardinals, Pee Wee Reese (SS) of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Johnny Mize (1B) of the New York Giants highlighted the National League’s starting lineup, with the Giants Walker Cooper (C), Chicago Cubs Andy Pafko (3B) and Brooklyn Dodgers Ralph Branca (SP) rounded out the stating squad. Musial started the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run home run off Masterson, scoring Ashburn. But, sadly for the NL, it was much of the same after Musial’s blast. The AL came storming back in the second with a solo shot from Evers and then a sacrifice fly from Boudreau to score Senators Mickey Vernon to tie the game at 2-2 in the third. In the fourth, however, the AL took the lead for good with a two-run RBI single from Yankee pitcher Vic Raschi followed by a sacrifice from DiMaggio that scored Red Sox Birdie Tebbetts. Though the NL threatened in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, Raschi struck out Ashburn looking to end the inning. Cincinnati Reds Ewell Blackwell and Philadelphia Athletics Joe Coleman closed out the game, as Raschi took the win and Cubs Johnny Schmitz took the 5-2 loss. Standout performances came from Musial (.500 BA, 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), George McQuinn (.500 BA, 2-for-4) and Raschi (1.000 BA, 1-for-1, 2 RBI/3 IP, 3 H, 3 K). The AL also got single RBI for DiMaggio, Evers and Boudreau.
