Description: IF THE PROSPECT PLEASES The West The Guidebooks Never Mention Written by Ladd Haystead. Published by University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, Oklahoma. Copyright 1945; “First Edition” is stated on the copyright page. Ladd claims that this is the only book about the West by a Westerner that doesn’t go “lachrymose, chauvinistic, or completely mushy.” Its secondary purpose, he says further, “is to give service men, war workers, and just ordinary folks who are tired of living as and doing what they are, a fairly comprehensive and critical view of the West as it is—not as Greeley, Lummis, and others thought of it.” Ladd Haystead wrote several book regarding American agriculture and farming. He was the farm editor of Fortune Magazine. Born in 1903, he describes his life in a Presbyterian parsonage in a little lumber and mining town in the Pacific Northwest (Washington) in his book Preacher’s Kid published in 1942. The green cloth hardcover is clean and shows light wear at the corners and edges. The book is ex-library with a perforation stamp on the title page and a stamp on the rear pastedown. The pastedowns have evidence of the removal of the dust jacket which had been pasted to it. The interior is otherwise nice with no names, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dust jacket is price clipped and worn at the edges. The spine area is faded. It is rubbed and a bit worn at the edges and corners. The flap edges are damaged from removal from the pastedowns. There are several tears which have been stabilized on the back with transparent tape. From the dust jacket description: “The West is the place where you climb for water, dig for wood, look farther and see less, and the Powder River runs uphill from Texas. It’s a land of fable, myth, tradition and the lack of it, of extremes of heat and cold, wetness and dryness, lowness and highness, of proms and bitter disappointment, of million-dollar schemes by the countless people who own no more than a jalopy or the down-payment on a radio. It’s a land that has been exploited worse than almost any other part of the globe; and a land still incredibly rich in resources, in plans, hopes, and eagerness to find a ‘pardner’ who will grubstake a ‘deal.’ “ Thus speaks Ladd hayseed, himself a westerner, in this candid analysis of a region, its people and its customs, its past and its future.
