THE "COMPLETE ENGINEER" SERIES VOLUME 16 HYDRAULIC MACHINERY DEALING WITH THE DESIGN, APPLICATION, OPERATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF HYDRAULIC PRESSES AND SHEARS, INCLUDING THOSE USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ARMAMENTS Prepared by a Staff of Technical Experts under the direction of E. MOLLOY WITH FIFTY PHOTOGRAPHS AND DIAGRAMS 1941 CHEMICAL PUBLISHING COMPANY, Inc. Brooklyn, N. Y. ----------- 3 ----------- THE "COMPLETE ENGINEER" SERIES VOL. 16 HYDRAULIC MACHINERY ----------- 3 ----------- PREFACE HE EAVY engineering is one of the basic industries of this country. It is in connection with this industry that hydraulic machinery plays its most vital part, where it is used for forging, pressing, and shearing metals in the iron and steel works which supply the whole of the engineering industry. Hydraulic presses also play an important part in the manufacture of many of the products of our great engineering works. Guns, pro- jectiles, armour plating, locomotive parts such as axles, wheels, and tyres all depend for their production upon hydraulically operated machinery. In addition there are many other special applications in connection with automobile manufacture, the production of moulded products, etc., where hydraulic machinery provides the most effective method of pressing and forming the requisite components. The present book gives a survey of up-to-date practice in this sphere of engineering. Chapter I explains clearly the basic laws which govern the operation of all types of hydraulic machines, and shows how they are applied in practice in the design and construction of a typical machine. Chapters II to V are devoted to hydraulic presses and their applications to various duties. Chapter II, for example, deals with forging and forging presses. Chapter III describes the hydraulic machines used in the manufacture of guns, projectiles, and armour. Chapter IV deals with the special presses which have been developed for the manufacture of railway material. Chapter V gives examples of presses employed for producing articles of everyday use-moulded products such as "Bakelite," chassis frames, tubes, and other shapes, produced by the extrusion process, and so on. The final chapter deals with the use of rolling-mill shears. Useful notes for the plant engineer on layout of machines, running, and main- tenance are given in the various chapters. We are indebted to Davy and United Engineering Co., Ltd., James Walker & Co., Ltd., and Alfred Herbert, Ltd., for supplying drawings, photographs, and data relating to the modern examples of hydraulic machinery which have been used to illustrate the text.
