Description: TARSOULI, ATHINA. "Costumes Grecs”, “Greek costumes". Priced at equivalent of only £15 per lithograph. Athens: Lithography shop V. Papachrysanthou, 1941. folio (355 x 250mm). 9 pages of two colour text, in Greek then French, followed by 2 pages of notes and list of the works, also bilingual, [not numbered] and 65 chromo-lithographed seperate pictures drawn by Tarsouli in tempera and aquarelle by Greek painter and engraver Kostas Grammatopoulos (collated) in seven paper folders with area names according to region as below, the whole housed in original folio card wrapper. The 7 card folders have sellotape to the spine. The protective card outer folder has aged sellotape to all edges. 1-6 Attique, Attica prefecture 7-12 Roumelie, Central Greece 13-16 Eubee, Euboea island, 17-23 Thessalie , Thessaly region 24-41 Epire, Epirus region 42-56 Macedonie , Macedonia region 57-65 Thrace, Thrace region. All the lithographs have been checked, and are unmarked unless as noted below, each signed by Tarsouli to lower right of drawing. Colours are bright and sharp. All the plates have very minor corner creasing to both top right and lower left corners as if from the folder having been dropped at some time in its 82 years existence! Plate 3, 65 finger mark very lower right corner; 11, 42, 55 small spot to far left edge; 24, 34, 35 have spotting along leading edge (2mm). None of these flaws are obtrusive and would not be visible if the plates have a card mount when framing. This is a very good set indeed, complete, a rare collection and very scarce in this condition. There are 65 signed lithographs for £499 (which equates to a price of only £7.70 each.) Athina Tarsouli was a Greek artist who was born in Athens 18 January1884, died 1975. Also known as Athena Tarsoule. Around 1915 she had her first painting lessons and five years later she settled down in Paris to study painting and drawing in the studio of Suzanne Hurel. Her stay in the French capital and contact with the artistic movements of the time influenced her initial output. The folklore studies of Angeliki Hatzimichali (1895-1956) first published in the early 1920s influenced Tarsouli's historiographical and literary work. She devoted her life to the study of the Greek tradition, documenting the daily customs, traditions, crafts and clothing of rural Greece.
