Description: This listing is for a custom built pedal car that is patterned after a 1937 Cord model 812 phaeton convertible sedan or Sportsman convertible coupe. Several people told me it was built by Jerry Anderson. He built a few of these and a few 1936 Auburn boattail speedsters, a few 1934 Ford roadster pedal cars, and perhaps some other pedal cars 15 or 20 years ago. I just acquired one of his 1934 Ford roadster pedal cars and consigned it with an auction house to sell later this spring. I bought both this Cord and the Auburn from a collector in Pennsylvania several years ago and sold the Auburn pedal car to a local collector who has a very nice Glen Pray Auburn boattail speedster replica. I would say that the custom sheet metal work on this beauty is about 80% completed and that it needs some final massaging of the fenders and panels to make it ready for paint. Nearly anyone capable of restoring an early vehicle should be able to complete the metal work. One will need to smooth out the nose and add the correct number of louvers to make the grill or "fence" as Cord enthusiasts sometime refer to it as. One would also do well to add such accessories as the outside door handles, tail lamps, license plate mount, etc. A more accurate steering wheel with horn ring would be great as would some dash detail. The seat and the insides of the doors should be upholstered. This model came with no wheels or tires so I found the ones shown here several years ago. Those 4 tires on this toy are very special indeed. They are 2.50 x 4 wide whitewalls made by Coker Tire several years ago and are no longer available today. They really make this toy. In my mind, a Cord is only a Cord if it has the correct and very distinctive wheel covers on it. I have an original Cord wheel cover that is in somewhat rough condition that I used to make an engineering drawing of the several contours and features on it. I had planned to use that drawing and reduce it to the scale necessary to make authentic looking wheel covers for this fine model car. Without the wheels and tires installed, this gem measures 56 inches long over the bumpers by 22 inches wide and 13 inches to the top of the back of the cowl or 16 inches tall to the top of the custom built windshield frame. Installing the 4 wheels and tires will raise this pedal car another 2 inches. If one removes the 4 wheels and tires as well as the fragile windshield, the steering wheel and both bumpers to make the package as small as possible for shipping, the height becomes only 13 inches while the length becomes only 53 inches. If one adds 2 inches of foam packing on all sides of this model, the overall shipping dimensions then become 57 by 26 by 17 inches. The length and girth of the boxed model will be about 143 inches which is well under the UPS Ground limit of 168 inches. I entered the above dimensions for the eBay shipping calculator estimator. The boxed weight will be around 60 pounds. The $50 handling fee is for the local UPS Store to build a special cardboard box to ship this model in. If you own a full-sized Cord or collect pedal vehicles, this could be your only chance to add something like this to your collection. You might do well to give some very serious thought to buying this beauty while you still can. I am now 67 years of age and finally realized that I do not need all of the projects that I once thought I did. Please check back to this listing because I will add more information soon.
