Its commemorative appeal was lost when it was reissued in 1938. 1938 coins fetch a much higher price because the mintage that year was much smaller. Coins contain 0.841 oz ASW The 1938 crown proof was prepared as a single commercial proof issue along with the other 1938 denominations as part of the proofcoin coin program for collectors started in 1937. A total of 100 coins were prepared, but the relatively high issue price of 6 /- made it undesirable, especially in the post-depression United States, where most Australian proof coins were sold. Furthermore, the pioneer of proof coins, H. G. Williams, did not commission the crown with the rest of the proofs, perhaps due to his disappointment with the benefits of the 1937 crown (Verheyen, T, V, 2009). A total of 100 were prepared, however the distributors' correspondence with the Melbourne mint indicated that 18 had been sold and a further 6 were sold to that distributor (Verheyen, T, V, 2009), although information compiled by Sharples indicates that a total of 52 were sold (Sharples, J, 1990), the other 28 probably at a later date.
