THIS COPY INSCRIBED BY UPTON SINCLAIR TO DAVE IWERKS.Three men are cast ashore on a tropical island, and one of them becomes the "owner", and hires the other two to work for wages; so they soon have "overproduction " of fish and coco-nuts, with "hard times", unemployment, a "coco-nut line," strikes, "Reds," troubles we know so well....This merry satire on the depression was produced during the California EPIC campaign, request for the script were received from Iceland, South Africa, and Japan. The End Poverty in California movement (EPIC) was a political campaign started in 1934 by socialist writer Upton Sinclair (best known as author of The Jungle). The movement formed the basis for Sinclair's campaign for Governor of California in 1934.We suspect Sinclair gifted this inscribed copy to Dave Iwerks perhaps in the mid 1950's in the hopes Iwerks' Hollywood connections would possibly help this orphan screenplay find eventual production which it never did. Provenance: This item is from the library of legendary Walt Disney animator, inventor, and special effects technician Ub Iwerks. Ub was Walt Disney's first business partner and chief animator. Iwerks collection features many early and important photography books dealing with all aspects of photography, imaging, special effects and photo history. Iwerk's son David also carried on his interest in photography and because of his interest in photography Ub's collection remained in the family from Ub's death in 1971 until recently.
