Antonio Notariello (Tenor) (Foggia, Italia 1892 – London, England 1975) He studied singing under Agostino Roche and Fernando De Lucia in Napoli and began his career in 1919, appearing in Napoli (Teatro San Carlo), Roma (Teatro Costanzi) and Milano (Teatro Dal Verme). He has been described by the leading music critic of Naples as the most classical and beautiful tenor of the young generation. In 1921 under engagement to Meters. J. & N. Tail, he was induced to extend his English, American, and Continental tour to Australasia; and in New Zealand and Sydney, where he was associated with thoVerbrugghen Orchestra at the Sydney Conseryatorium, he won tremendous popularity. He then toured Australia with the Melba Company during the 1920s singing Rodolfo in “La Boheme’’ and Duca in “Rigoletto’’. He came to England in 1929, where he remained for the rest of his life. He last broadcast in 1948 on the Western Regional programme. (Information supplied by Michael E. Henstock, University of Nottingham). In 1936 he was married to the daughter of John Macmillan Brown, a Scot who became a prominent New Zealand anthropologist and university leader. His career cut short due to unspecified illness.
