Description: Having been an important cotton exporter to St. Louis, Memphis & New Orleans, LeFlore County was over 90% African American at the turn of the twentieth century. It became a heartbreaking nexus for the failings of Reconstruction America having one of the highest lynching rates in the country and much later the site of Emmett Till's murder in 1955. (11) requests dating between 1908 & 1927; sent largely by cotton plantation, gin & lumber mill owners on behalf of their laborers / sharecroppers to marry. The personal relationship to the farmhands & owners shine through in the language of their requests. Some w/ care for the speed of the license's arrival and many noting 'colored' and 'negro' behind the applicants names. Largest 8.5 x 11" w/ original folds, pen & staple holes.
