Description: ArtStory Fine Art Gorgeous 18th century Old Master Follower of Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) The original painting was part of the decoration of the Antwerp Jesuit church for which Peter Paul Rubens received the commission in 1620. The “Return of the Holy Family from Egypt” was donated by the mayor of Antwerp Nicolas Rockox, a close friend of Rubens´ and was placed on the altar dedicated to Saint Joseph in the right hand nave. After the dissolution of the Jesuit College on 1777 the work was auctioned and became part of a private collection, and later was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1871. In 2012 St. Charles Borromeo Church was able to acquire it at auction at Christie’s.It was installed above St. Joseph’s altar, to the left of the high altar, its original location.
