Description: This c. 1754 copperplate engraving depicts a bullfrog ("La Grenouille Mugissante") and a Surinam toad ("Le Crapaud Pipa"). It is plate 26 from Histoire Naturelle, part of the encyclopedia published by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, and taken from a drawing by Francois-Nicolas Martinet. 15 1/2" x 10". Condition: Left blank margin shows evidence of being excised from a volume, a 1" tear at lower blank margin reinforced with archival tissue/tape. Generally very good condition.
