Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) attractive antique print "Black Hamburghs.". The Hamburg, Dutch: Hollands hoen, German: Hamburger, is a breed of chicken which is thought to have originated in Holland sometime prior to the fourteenth century. The name may be spelled Hamburgh in the United Kingdom and in Australia. Eleven different colour varieties are recognised in Germany and Holland, including silver-spangled, gold-spangled, gold-pencilled, citron-pencilled, silver-pencilled, white, black and citron-spangled. DATE PRINTED: 1911. The print is undated but other Hamburghs in the series were dated 1899, so the probable date of engraving. This series of prints has become very collectible because of their loving detail.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 18 x 23 cm (7 x 9 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by J.W. Ludlow. J.W. Ludlow was an ornithological artist who specialized in domestic birds. He illustrated several books published by Cassell and others between 1867 and 1886 on poultry and pigeons. Without doubt, he was one of the finest poultry illustrators of the late 1800s. PROVENANCE: Published in 'Wright's Book of Poultry', by S.H. Lewer. Published by The Waverley Book Company, 1911. Each bird is sensitively portrayed in a natural farm or henhouse setting, imbued with its own personality and temperament that seems to correspond to its appearance.TYPE: Antique lithograph printed on paper.
