Map with some minor wear and tear. Central fold. The Franco-German War of 1870–1871, sometimes called the Franco-Prussian War or the War of 1870, was a conflict that took place from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871 between France and a coalition of German states led by Prussia and including the twenty-one other member states of the North German Confederation, as well as the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Württemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden. On July 19, 1870, the French Empire declared war on the Kingdom of Prussia. The French troops were nevertheless poorly prepared, less numerous (300,000 against 500,000, much more than expected in the general staff because Prussia succeeded in allying itself with Baden, Württemberg and Bavaria5) and lacked a concerted military strategy; the German troops had recent – and victorious – experience of fire (with the conflicts against Denmark in 1864 and Austria two years later), heavy artillery and excellent training. Marked by technical innovations concerning fire, which allowed for faster shooting, and the significant decline in the role of the cavalry, the conflict quickly turned to the advantage of the Germans. The French were defeated several times in early August on the Eastern Front. The army of Chalons came to reinforce the last barrier before Paris: the place of Metz; Napoleon III, who led the army until August 7, the day he was severely defeated, handed over command to General Mac Mahon. He left the regency to his wife Eugénie de Montijo. Surrounded at Sedan, the emperor capitulated on September 2, 1870. Even before the armistice was signed, the German states united into a German Empire, proclaimed at the Palace of Versailles on January 18, 1871. The victory led to the annexation by the Reich of Alsace (except the Territoire de Belfort) and part of Lorraine (present-day Moselle), which France would not recover until 1918 following the First World War. The new empire asserts its power in Europe to the detriment of Austria-Hungary and France. The latter also had to bear the occupation of a good third of its territory until 1873 and the payment of compensation of 5 billion gold francs. From Mars 18 to May 28, 1871, the Paris Commune, along with those of other major cities, rose up against the government (with a monarchist majority); the latter crushed the Parisian Communards during Bloody Week and repressed other insurrections until June 7, 1871. Defeat and Loss of Alsace-Lorraine provoke in France a feeling of lasting and extreme frustration which contributes to the rise of a vengeful nationalism, but also to a questioning of the education of the French elites. The creation of a vast colonial empire will partly allow it to regain its weakened power. The consequences of the fighting also significantly changed international humanitarian law and left their mark on artists, who praised the vanquished in their works.
