The book was constructed of the finest materials and features hundreds of portraits and other illustrations, some in color. This limited edition (#70 of 1200) was expensive to produce and costly to own; it was never available to the general public but instead offered by subscription to Carnegies, Chases, Rockefellers, etc. This is the single-volume edition (there was also a two-volume edition, which seems to be more common). This ten-pound book is bound in its original covers of marbled boards and ribbed, leather spine and corners. It remains in quite good condition. The covers show some general wear, mostly about the edges; the leather is cracked at the spine joints. The covers are still firmly attached, however, and the text is firmly bound. The bookplate of the former owner is affixed inside the front cover. A corner is missing to the front free endpaper, and the first few pages show some age and use. The text is otherwise in fine shape, only minor signs of age or handling. In all a very presentable copy of this magnificent production, which is rarely on the market and lists for twice this price when it appears.
