Third edition (printing). In contemporary prize fine binding: full scarlet red calf with double filet paneling (one blind stamped filet and one tooled in gilt); intricate gilt logo for Church Schools Company centered on top board; five raised gilt tooled spine bands with elaborately gilded compartments and a gilt-lettered morocco spine label. Ruled in gilt (all edges gilt lined); gilt turn-ins/inner dentelles; all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. A sumptuous prize binding! Awarded to a student for excellence in scripture at Durham High School (a private day school for girls in Durham, England). Octavo, 7.25” x 5”, 221 pages (including Notes section). Joseph Barber Lightfoot (April 1828 – December 1889), known as J. B. Lightfoot, was an English theologian and Bishop of Durham. From 1854 to 1859 he edited the Journal of Classical and Sacred Philology. In 1857, he became tutor and his fame as a scholar grew. He was made Hulsean professor in 1861, and shortly afterwards chaplain to the Prince Consort and honorary chaplain in ordinary to Queen Victoria. The book is in VERY GOOD antiquarian condition for a 130-year-old binding. volumes. Square spines with firm hinges with some light cracking beginning at the head and foot of the front joint. Rubbing to boards, spine and extremities. A gash in the leather on the top board. Corners bumped. Spine sun-darkened a shade or two. Fixing to and near the endpapers otherwise beautifully clean interior with bright pages. No writing except gift inscription on front flyleaf, where there is also a former owner bookplate.
