A history of the English people, from the English conquest and the development of kingdoms, through the Hundred Years' War, the Reformation, Puritan England, and the Revolution, to modern England. Green's A Short History of the English People, which first appeared in 1874, at once gave him an assured place in the first rank of historical writers. In 1915 the study was republished as part of the Everyman Library, which has been said to have begun a new epoch in the writing of history, making the social, industrial, and moral progress of the people its main theme. Volume one is illustrated with a coloured frontispiece, eleven coloured plates, and many in-text images. Volume two is illustrated with nine coloured plates and many in-text images. Volume three is illustrated with a folding coloured frontispiece, one coloured plate, and many in-text images. Volume four is illustrated with a coloured frontispiece, three coloured plates, and one double-page black-and-white plate, with many in-text images. Collated complete. Written by John Richard Green, an English historian. Edited by Alice Stopford Green, an Irish historian, and Kate Norgate, a British historian and one of the first women to achieve academic successes in this sphere.
