Description: This is 5 pieces of Limoges porcelain with fanciful underwater fish and fauna on a platter, three matching/coordinated plates and one handled sauce boat with attached plate. Colorful and charming! Wonderful decorative pieces as well as for use. Gilt work on edges has worn and faded. The pattern is transfer with hand painted details, as was the practice for Limoges pieces in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to meet high demand. While dating to the Victorian era, this design has a fresh contemporary appeal. I simply love it! Plates measure: 9" diameter Platter measures: 24" long x 9 1/2" wide Sauce boat measures: 9" long including handle, approximately 4" deep, attached saucer is 9 1/2" long x 6" wide. The fish patterns on the platter are repeated on the plates. One fish on the sauce boat matches the platter, the other fish is not on the platter. It is unknown how many plates would have been made in this set. The hallmark featuring an Eiffel Tower and the initials "MR" on Limoges porcelain pieces is associated with the artist Martine Rassineux. Martine Rassineux is a recognized Limoges artist known for her hand-painted porcelain creations. The inclusion of the Eiffel Tower in the hallmark often signifies a Parisian theme or origin, aligning with the artist's French heritage, alternately I also found this reference: The hallmark featuring an Eiffel Tower on Limoges porcelain is associated with the decorator A. Lanternier & Co., which operated in Limoges, France. This specific mark was used around 1890. A. Lanternier & Co. was established in 1885 and became known for producing and decorating fine porcelain. The inclusion of the Eiffel Tower in their hallmark likely reflects the cultural significance of the tower, which was completed in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Limoges porcelain is renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and intricate designs. Limoges is primarily known for its high-quality porcelain, not china. The term "Limoges" refers to porcelain produced in the Limoges region of France, famous for its fine white clay called kaolin, which is essential to porcelain production. Limoges porcelain is known for its durability, translucency, and ability to be intricately decorated, often with hand-painted designs or gilding.
