Description: For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . 1887 Lone Jack Cigarette Company tobacco card (N370) honoring the American Association Champions [#6] - NAT HUDSON ~ St. Louis Browns, American Association (today's Cardinals) REPRINT ~ Near-Mint "N370" (actually, simply "370") - the "N" (for 19th century) being added in later years - is the designation Jefferson Burdick in his American Card Catalog decades ago gave Lone Jack Cigarette Company's Saint Louis Browns (today's Cardinals) cards of 1887. Original cards from this set are now more than 125 years old and an individual card of the most common player will cost ten thousand dollars or more in top condition. This card is reproduced in same size as the original 1-1/2" by 2-1/2" size. The reverse side states: "This card is a REPRINT of a card originally produced by the LONE JACK Cigarette Co. in 1887". Lone Jack originals are a true rarity. A check of eBay (August 2020) revealed no originals offered for this set! Suffice to say, only a reprint is within the financial reach of most baseball hobbyists!A bit of baseball history: The St. Louis Browns of the 19th century eventually became the St. Louis National League ball club of today known as the Cardinals. In the 1880s and '90s they played in the American Association, then a major league, and the Browns/Cardinals were "pretty good": They won 4 straight American Association championships, 1885-1888. They were so good, in fact, that in what passed for the world series of the era, they tied the older National League White Stockings (3-3-1) in the 7 game 1885 championship and then beat the Pale Hose, 4 games to 2, with these 1886 players. (For the record, St. Louis lost the next two post-season titles, 10 games to 5 to the National League Detroit Wolverines and 6 games to 4 to the New York Giants in 1887 and '88, respectively.) Condition: Near-Mint Collecting Tip: for those seeking detailed information regarding Old Judge cards - and especially N172's, we recommend (and sell) The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Co. ~ 1886-1890, the encyclopedic 459-page hardbound book. _______________________ Important: Shipping Information A goal has always been to keep shipping costs low.
