Description: This beautiful spoon measures 7" long and weighs 1.38 troy ounces. Apostle spoons were hugely popular in England between the 15th and the 17th centuries. They were customary presents that godparents gave to a newborn child as a christening gift. Son of Zebedee, brother of Saint John. James is termed "The Greater" as he became an Apostle before the younger James the Lesser. The first Apostle to be martyred, he was killed in 44AD, stabbed with a sword by King Herod Agrippa. He is the Patron Saint of apothecaries, blacksmiths, labourers and pilgrims. No cracks or chips. Used but not abused. Needs a little polish. All measurements are approximate.
