1882 TRUE WOMANHOOD by Franklin Johnson SUFFRAGE antique

Description: True Womanhood: Hints on the Formation of Womanly Character by Franklin Johnson Cambridge, Mass.; 1882Original cloth with gilt titleSize 5 by 6 3/4"139 ppMinor wear of binding, very good interiorText in English==============================The idea of "true womanhood" was part of the "Cult of True Womanhood", a cultural system that governed gender roles for middle- and upper-class Americans in the 19th century. The Cult of True Womanhood promoted the idea that women should possess four virtues: piety, purity, domesticity, and submissiveness. The ideal woman was the center of the family, and her sphere of influence was limited to the home. The Cult of True Womanhood was disseminated through books, magazines, religious literature, and annuals. The idea was promoted by white and Protestant women and men, especially in New England and the Northeastern United States. However, the definition of "true womanhood" excluded Black, working-class, and immigrant women. =====================Please see my other auctions Thank You Refund Policy: We will issue a FULL REFUND, 100% money back if you are not satisfied with your purchase.
