Description: Original 1882 cabinet photo of a cute little boy, with photograph taken by P. H. Rose of Galveston, Texas. Boldly written in pencil on back is “Temple Wheeler, born at Temple, Texas, Aug. 4th, 1881, [photo] taken October 1882. 1st white child born in Temple, Tex.”, Stewart Wheeler, another bro, Sophie Wheeler, their mother, maiden name Diermeyer.” Genealogical research confirms the handwritten information, and adds that the boy’s father was James Stuart Wheeler; however, I urge the winning bidder to do his/her own research. In 1905, Temple married Hattie Elkins in Beaumont. A newspaper clipping includes the following information: “Mr. Wheeler is the son of J. S. Wheeler, an old and well known railroad man of Texas, who was agent at Temple TX, at the time of Temple’s birth 23 years ago. He was the first child born in the town of Temple and was named after the town. Mr. Wheeler is at present the city circulator of the Beaumont Journal…” From Wikipedia: Jonathan Ewing Moore sold 181 acres to the Santa Fe Railroad, which needed a central junction point for the hundreds of miles of track that were beginning to spread throughout the state. Trains brought prospective buyers from five different cities to the land auction held on June 29, 1881. A party and a barbecue highlighted the event, and, soon, Temple, Texas, began to emerge. The town was named for chief engineer Bernard M. Temple, who was responsible for building the tracks through Bell County. From online: P.H. Rose first appears in Galveston working as a camera operator for Solomon T. Blessing's photographic studio in 1874. Artist Louis Eyth ran the studio operation, while Blessing concentrated on the photographic stock business with his brother John Blessing. Eyth knew the aesthetics of portraiture, Rose the mechanics of photograph making. In three years he absorbed the artistic aspects of picture taking, and Blessing invited him into a full partnership in the studio. The firm was named Blessing & Rose and was located at 174 Tremont. Additional information can be found online. Photo is 4 ¼ x 6 ½”. CONDITION: The photos has darkened and has light insect damage along the edges and upper corners.
