Description: 1872 Liberty Seated dollar, Choice XF, Extra Fine, with marvelously reflective surfaces and that "cartwheel" lustre that indicates a coin untouched by mistreatment - though not quite a candidate to be categorized as "prooflike." This attractive specimen has blue toning at the bottom of the obverse rim and the corresponding top of the reverse rim. Additional golden-brown toning is embedded amid the lustre. We have kept a couple of the several of these we sell out of encapsulation, in case a collector prefers it this way, though this one is good enough to "send out" for encapsulation. This silver dollar, pre-Morgan, was produced in quantities of over a million, with most of them thought to have been shipped to China in trade - though some were kept in banks in the U.S. Once the price of silver stabilized, dollars of this year were released to circulation. As it is unlikely that U.S. coins sent to Asia returned, that is likely the history of this one with moderate circulation. More 1872 dollars were minted than 1871s, but are actually rarer than the latter now, with about 2,000 remaining. This coin circulated some, but not heavily, and weights 26.59 grams, which compares to an uncirculated weight of 26.73 g as a dollar in XF or better condition should. This was apparently set aside and saved at some point, until deposited in a bank or saved for a collection as Morgan dollars began to arrive in circulation. We don't know these things exactly and so they will remain part of the coin's mystery. The Real Deal, Frontier-era 1872 Liberty Seated dollar is offered for you here!
