Description: There aren’t too many fancy presidential campaign display pieces for Horace Greeley! Measures 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. Interesting size because it is big enough to display as intended, but also small enough to be the centerpiece of any display of smaller campaign items. This is the only known example. The elaborate calligraphy design reads that it is made "In Honor of The Great American Journalist... Horace Greeley Candidate for the nineteenth President of the United States of America". Published by D. T. Ames & Company of New York in 1872. Mounted on a manila backing not unlike a cabinet card with writing on reverse. Very slight irregular trim. This is a gorgeous piece for a rare candidate. I know the political memorabilia hobby is partial to Ferrotypes and ribbons and tokens etc and these are all great. There is no “category” that this unusual piece really fits into. But I think the visual impact and display value (and rarity) of this piece speaks for itself (and as to subjective value, in my opinion, compares very favorably with any other Greeley campaign items, which tend to be pricey as Greeley campaign items are rarer in general than many other candidates). I paid a little more than $1000 for this years ago and thought I stole it! Sometimes the unusual items that are not “commodities” can actually be the best value, and I think that is the case here!
