Description: Two volume set entitled Picturesque America. This was first published by Appleton's as a serial semi monthly for subscribers. Once their subscription was complete, the serials would be bound into a two volume set. A variety of binding options were available for the original Volume 1 published in 1872 and Volume II published in 1874. The books include essays written by various authors and illustrated with 900 wood and 50 steel engravings. These engravings were done by highly skilled artists off of the original drawings. Most of the drawings were composed by Harry Fenn who was the most prominent landscape illustrator in the United States at that time. This set is leather bound with decorative gilt title on the cover and the spine completed with heavy gold edge to the pages. The book is 13" tall x 10 1/4" wide. The volumes are in very good to excellent condition for their age. There is wear along the edges and spine from use and storage. The onion paper between a few of the engravings are larger than the pages themselves and show fraying and wear along the edge. Published by D. Appleton & Co of New York.
