1871 Indian Cent Shallow "N" VG++/Fine, SLEEPER VAR., 200 KNOWN, RARER THAN 1877

Description: This is an 1871 Shallow N Indian cent. Rick Snow says there are 200 known in all grades and 20 in mint state. Here you have the chance to get an extremely rare Indian cent at a good price. History: 1859 to 1869 a Shallow N reverse was used because it made it easier to strike up the copper-nickel Indian cents. In 1864 the alloy was changed so that they would use 95 percent copper and 5 percent tin and zinc. They kept using dies with the Shallow N reverse until 1869. In 1870 the mint started using a new reverse called Bold N reverse because the Shallow N was no longer needed to help strike the coins better. 1870-1872 there were still some leftover Shallow N dies which were used in addition to the new Bold N dies. Slightly more Bold N dies were used in 1870 than Shallow N dies which is why 1870 shallow n Indian cents are slightly rarer than Bold N coins but not by much. In 1871 It was almost all dies used were Bold N dies except for 2 dies. That is why the 1871 Shallow N is so much rarer than the normal 1871 with a Bold N. In 1872 there were some Shallow N dies used but definitely more Bold N dies. That is why the 1872 Shallow is moderately scarce and rarer than the normal 1872. In 1877 all coins are Shallow N. 1873-1876 and 1878 to last year 1909 are all Bold N.
