Description: Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. Grant Harpers Weekly 1865 This is a wood-engraved single sheet only which is over 150 years old! It was published in the Dec. 9, 1865, issue of Harper's Weekly, America's leading illustrated paper in the 1800s. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size. It is in excellent condition, with a few small age spots on the page, and a light crease across its center (see photos). It presents an attractive full-page portrait of Ulysses S. Grant which would make a great display piece. Published a half-year after the end of the Civil War, the engraving was based on a photograph by Gutekunst of Philadelphia. It shows Grant in a classic pose, as the nation's greatest War hero, and it was images such as this which helped later propel him to the Presidency. The Harper's issue carried a related story elsewhere in the paper, titled Reception of General Grant, but it only has a single sentence commenting on this print, ending by saying, The portrait of Lieutenant-General GRANT, which we give our readers on page 772, is from a recent photograph by F. Gutekunst, Philadelphiathe best that has been produced. A photocopy of this article will accompany the print. [p2212] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
