Description: Sketch F Showing the Progress of the Survey in Section No.VI (Lower Sheet) From Cape Florida to Tortugas Islands from 1845 to 1860. Nice example of a mid-19th century U.S. Coast Survey triangulation chart (dated 1861) issued at the beginning of the Civil War showing the south Florida coast and the Florida Keys. The B&W folded chart covers from Key Biscayne Bay south along the Keys, past Key West, as far as the Marquesas Keys. Names each of the Keys and identifies Miami at the northern edge of Key Biscayne Bay, as well as the city of Key West. Shows detailed triangulation work, including various types of stations, and quite a bit of of coastal detail. The chart was produced under the supervision of A. D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey (and grandson of Benjamin Franklin). Condition: Folding chart in good antique condition, nice impression on sturdy, mildly age-toned paper, slightly darkened along the folds. Size: Approx. 21.5 x 34.5 inches Will ship USPS Media Mail for free.
