It is preceded by the Annals of Congress and the Register of Debates and succeeded by the Congressional Record. The set in this listing is for coverage of the first and second sessions, taking place from December 3, 1855 - August 18, 1856, and August 21, 1856 - August 30, 1856, respectively. There were numerous major events that took place during these sessions, such as elections being held for the first Kansas Territory legislature; the Kansas territorial legislature convened in Pawnee and began enacting pro-slavery laws; large-scale Bleeding Kansas violence began with events leading to the Wakarusa War between anti-slavery and pro-slavery forces; the Tintic War breaking out in Utah; and the American Party (Know-Nothings) nominating their first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore.
