Description: Title: Sooty Tern Plate 432 Date of Printing: 1856 Printing Technique: black and white stone lithograph with original hand-coloring Artist: John J. Audubon Details: ORIGINAL 1856 hand-colored stone lithograph from 2nd Audubon octavo edition of Birds of America. Lithographed, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. The octavo editions were sold by subscription in folios containing five plates each. Number in upper right corner is the plate (Pl.) number (total plates in the octavo edition was 500). Number in the upper left corner is the folio (No.) number; all five plates in each individual folio will have the same folio number. Paper Size: 7” high by 10 ½” wide Condition: Condition is EXCELLENT. Original hand-coloring is clean with no fading. Text above and below print is clean and sharp. There is an extremely faint smudge at the left edge (shown in photo of upper left corner) – looks like a faint ink transfer thumbprint made during printing. Other than that, there are no visible flaws. There is a narrow strip of original binding residue at the very top of the page. This could easily be matted out for framing. Shipping: U.S. Postal, insured with tracking. Print will be shipped flat. This is an OLD and ORIGINAL print - we sell NO reproductions! We do our best to accurately describe each piece. We have been selling antique prints at major shows on the West Coast for the past 35 years. PLEASE e-mail any questions.
