Description: 1855-O Type 2 Gold dollar, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Almost Uncirculated / AU details for being, as NGC said, "bent." But this could not be by much, as we laid it on a table surface before mailing off to be graded - and indeed, the bending, so possible with gold dollars, must be slight as it CANNOT BE SEEN in the slab! (and it looked flat to us on the table) So we are proud to offer this scarce and popular coin, indeed at a relatively more affordable price for its retained value. Type 2 dollar coins are popular and valuable, as the type run was short, just 1854-1856, and there are fewer coins to be acquired and possessed among interested and discerning collectors. 1855 was the last year the New Orleans Mint minted dollar coins, and so this one has a bit of "farewell" significance for gold dollar coin collectors. Only 55,000 were minted, and about 500 of these are estimated to have survived; indeed, even the condition census goes only to MS64. This specimen has the Mint designer James Longacre's preferred slanted 5s (so, 55) and weak ll's in "dollar" and 8 in its date, with a large mintmark "O" tilting gradually to the left, typical for this mintage. It has most of its mint lustre and is evidently a high AU except for the slight bend. Enjoy looking this key-date New Orleans dollar coin over and considering to purchase!
