Description: This original, 1" brass presidential campaign token or medal is from over 180 years ago, back when William Henry Harrison ran on the Whig Party ticket against President Martin van Buren. He had become known for a battle during The War of 1812, when some Native Americans were on the British side, called the Battle of Tippecanoe. And so, during the 1836 and '40 campaigns got the nickname "Old Tippecanoe" or "Old Tip." One of the most famous of his 1840 slogans was "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too," because his running mate was John Tyler. This token has a refence to those two men on its reverse on a banner held by an American eagle - at top with "Go it Tip" and, at bottom, "Come it Tyler." The year 1841 on front might make this an inaugural item. Because of Harrison's propaganda machine he became known as "the people's candidate." Much of his memorabilia had log cabins and hard cider barrels on them even though he was born in Virginia on a plantation and, even if he may have used log cabins while Governor of The Indiana Territory, he certainly wasn't raised in one. In fact, he built a 13-room plantation-style house in Vincennes, one of the first brick dwellings in that area. Ever since Harrison's time - and previously, with Andrew Jackson - presidential candidates have resorted to creating a myth about themselves to serve their expedient political purposes. And you thought such propaganda was all new. Wrong! It's part of our rich American history going back 180 years that makes collecting presidential items so rewarding.
