Description: This is the March 1841 complete issue of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. A very good copy that I neatly rescued a few days ago from an old damaged bound volume of the monthly. Outstanding content. 141 pages. Highlights here include: Thomas De Quincey's opening essay headed "The Dourraunee Empire." This on the then isolated and to many, unheard of, country of Afghanistan. The topic of Afghanistan was becoming a subject of the utmost urgency to the British Empire. De Quincey's essay appears here in the midst of the first of England's unsuccessful, catastrophic, Afghan Wars. The Dourraunees and the Ghiljies were the two primary native Afghan Tribes of the day, the Dourraunee at this date being in the ascendant. 21 pages. See photo #1 for the opening page. De Quincey also contributes a report in this number headed "Conservative Prospects," 16 pages, on the English Reform Movement of the era and its aftermath. The notable Scottish historical painter (and brother to artist William Bell Scott) David Scott's essay "The Caracci, Caravaggio, and Monachism." The first part (of 2) of the Irish poet Bartholomew Simmons' new fiction, "Miss Biddy Whelan's Business." James White's "Hints to Authors," (Second Series, "No. III"). Frederick Holme's "A Fifth Chapter of Turkish History: The Wars with the Mamluks; The Conquest of Egypt" (Part 5 of 10 installments). The young author, critic and philosopher, long resident in the Lake District, William Henry Smith's notable essay on the works of William Wordsworth (12 pages). Lots of excerpts here from the poet's works, Peter Bell, Tintern Abbey, etc. Smith was to be associated with Blackwood's as an able author and critic over many years (1839-1871). British barrister, novelist and politician Samuel Warren's early and influential legal novel (serialized in 21 monthly installments, this is #16) Ten Thousand A-Year. Here first printed. Some of the author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 64-65.
