Description: Hard to find single issue of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine for May 1841. A very good copy that I neatly rescued from an old and damaged bound volume of the monthly. 139 pages. Outstanding content in this number. Some highlights I find include: Thomas De Quincey's opening essay (18 pages) on the life and works of the early 19th century pioneering Danish-German historian and statesman Barthold Georg Niebuhr, his near contemporary. See photo for opening page. Artist and author John Eagles contributes an essay on "Schools of Design." 6 pages. Frederick Hardman on the exploits of the Spanish military leader and guerilla fighter (Peninsula Wars) Juan Martin Diez. It's headed: "The Treasure Convoy; A Passage in the Early Career of the Empecinado." 8 pages. Frederick Holme on "The Travels of Ebn Batuta," the great 14th century Berber/Maghrebi traveler, explorer, and author. 18 pages. Samuel Warren's early serial novel of the barrister trade, Part 18, of 21 monthly parts, Ten Thousand A-Year. J.F. Murray's "The World of London." Murray also contributes Part II of his "When I was in the Legion." 11 pages. George Croly's "Warren Hastings," No. II. 18 pages. Hastings was a foundational British colonial administrator (Bengal, India). An unsigned article on "The Wars of the Scots in France." 15 pages. Some author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 65.
