Description: This is a gorgeous steel engraving from the ground breaking Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library published in Edinburgh in the 1830's encompassing several dozen volumes. All of the plates I have available are from his from on Orinthology specifically, the study of birds. Each plate was hand cut, and once impressed into the paper, were hand colored - an incredibly labor intensive task resulting in some incredibly beautiful images. Each volume in the series only had 6 to 12 plates (illustrations). The plates available were purchased from a dealer who acquired them from a fellow antiquarian print dealer who had salvaged them from a complete set of the books 40 years ago. This plate depicts a waxwing or bohemian chatterer. Combine multiple purchases to save on shipping. Dimensions are approximately 4" x 7" (un-matted) and 6" x 9" in the matte. Matte is paper, plate comes out of the paper matte simply and easily. Ships flat via USPS ground advantage. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
