1834 Antique Print; Montagu / Buccleuch House, Richmond, London after Tombleson

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Seat of the Duke of Buccleuch, Richmond." An attractive view of Buccleuch House, built on Lower Road in Richmond. Set in an intricately engraved decorative border features the arms of the colleges, etc. DATE PRINTED: 1834 or shortly afterwards. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 21.5 x 17 cm , 8.5 x 6.75 inches (medium) plus margins with a blank back. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Samuel Lacey (1787-1859) after a drawing by William Tombleson. William Tombleson (1795 - c. 1846) was an English topographical and architecture artist, illustrator, copper and steel engraver, writer and printmaker, based in London. In the 1830s, his topographical drawings of the upper and middle River Rhine in Germany, and of the rivers Thames and Medway in England were published as engraved prints and books. PROVENANCE: This print was published in the highly regarded "Eighty Picturesque views on the Thames and Medway", more commonly known as Tombleson's Thames. TYPE: Fine antique steel-engraved print with decorative border. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In the mid 18th century, Montagu House, later known as Buccleuch House, was built on Lower Road and in 1769 the Duke of Montagu was granted ground by the Vestry of Richmond. The area was useless as common pasture because the steep gradient made it too dangerous for grazing cattle. In 1796 the house and gardens were described by Daniel Lysons: 'At the foot of the hill the Duke of Buccleuch has a villa ... It is situated on the banks of the Thames. From the lawn there is a subterraneous communication with the gardens and shrubberies on the opposite site of the road, which extends almost to the summit of the hill. They are laid out with taste and have local advantages to most places of the kind in the kingdom'. Following landslides after heavy rains in the 1920s and 1930s, the drainage system on the Hill was modernised and the damaged paths and steps were repaired. In 1937 Richmond Borough Council bought back Buccleuch House; this was later demolished and the riverside garden and promenade were opened to the public.
