The book consists of three separate sections on each place mentioned. Each section starts with a historical review of the area, and is followed by a poem inspired by Bury's visit. The text is accompanied by 6 stunning sepia aquatints of views in the region: the Ponte della Santa Trinita; two views of Valombrosa; two views of Camaldoli; and one of Laverna. There is some foxing to the edges of the aquatints (minimal to 2), but the plates themselves are still in beautiful condition. The aquatints are engraved by Thomas Lupton after the drawings of Edmund Bury. There are 2 further plates, an etched frontispiece (by Thomas Landseer), and an engraved portrait plate of the author. This is a handsome volume, of considerable interest to collectors, not only for its scarcity, but also for its provenance. This volume is from the library of Ernest Augustus (1771-1851), the fifth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. After a distinguished military career with the Hanoverian hussars (he lost an eye at Tournai in 1794), he returned to England and was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in 1799. In 1837, at the accession of Victoria, he became King of Hanover. This work includes his distinctive red library stamp at the verso of the title page. Furthermore he is referred to in the list of subscribers to the volume as the Duke of Cumberland.]. key words:
