Description: It is an authentic copper engraved antique map approximately 200 years old, blank on reverse, with original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. It is by d'Anville, who was the Royal Cartographer of the King of France. D'Anville's name is at the bottom of the title block on the map. It was published in the Atlas de Geographie Ancienne pour servir a l'intellegence des Oeuvres de Rollin (Paris, 1818), a copy of the title page is included. The maps were engraved in 1818 by Ambroise Tardieu as a reference for Rollin's still very popular history. Charles Rollin is best know for reviving the study of Greek at the University of Paris and wrote two massive works on Ancient History, 12 vols. & Roman History, 5 vols., for which Jean Baptiste d'Anville (1697-1782) designed the maps. Rollin's died before finishing the final four volumes of Roman History, which De Crevier finished, thus the this map references De Crevier rather than Rollin. D'anville refused to merely copy older maps which had been the tradition, but went to great lengths to research and verify the locations of ancient sites. Overall, it is a very well preserved rare map with nice strong color and an antique appearance that would frame up very well. Size: The image area measures approximately 8 1/4 by 10 3/4 inches (21x27cm) on a 13 1/2 by 20" (35x51cm), with a margin all around, as seen in the main pic. Condition: It is in Very Good to Excellent condition with original hand coloring and a centerfold as issued. It is printed on a off white page with embossed plate marks in the margin. Other than a few minor specks in the margin, it is very clean with strong color on a bright page that would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map.
