Description: John Britton was an antiquarian and writer who rose from humble beginnings to start what was considered to be a new type of literary work concerning the topography of an area. He first published, at the request of a Salisbury publisher, “The Beauties of Wiltshire” in 1801, moving onto “Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain” and followed by this set, “Cathedral Antiquities of England”. There are nine volumes to the work, published in six bindings: Salisbury and Norwich dated 1814-16: Winchester and York Minster (1816-1819): Litchfield, Oxford and Canterbury (1819-1823): Wells and Exeter (1823-1827), Peterborough, Gloucester and Bristol (1827-1830) and Hereford and Worcester (1830-1835). The set is in good condition, with uncut edges and illustrations intact. Many have the name, “Henry Ellison,Esq” written either at the top of the page or along the very bottom edge. Interiors seem to be good with some discoloration due to age, and light foxing. Please email for more photos or with questions. Good Condition: folio: six volumes: red leather with cream endpapers: engravings and text on heavy paper: gilt lettering on spines: bookplate inside front of volume one but not in others: name written at top of title pages or along bottom: illustrations complete some with tissue overlays intact: “The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Churches” (Britton’s Cathedrals: Cathedral Antiquities): John Britton: London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown: 1814RAREB1814HPVA
