Description: This is an original portrait painting of George Jeffreys 1st Barone Jeffreys , Lord Chancellor under King James. He was known as the "hanging judge" with over 700 executions. This is an original oil painting from the 1600s. I do not know the artist but it must have been a dutch master that was appointed to paint members of Parliament. He was a high official under King James and the artist would have been commissioned by Parliament to do this portrait painting . Looks like the original work on canvas was later attached to another canvas linen and framed in this style. There is a tag at the bottom of the frame that reads " The Hanging Judge" . The piece was more than like preserved and then reframed into this frame . There is some peeling of the paint as would be expected with most 17th century paintings. A very significant and historical portrait. If the artist of the work could be determined, it would in fact increase the value of the painting. Once in a lifetime chance to get such a significant 17th century original painting of a historical member of Parliament. Thanks for looking (possible Sir Godfrey Kneller painting) look at last picture. Sir Godfrey Kneller was the court appointed painter under King James the 2nd. My portrait is very similar to other paintings that have sold with Soethby's Auction house) MAKE ME AN OFFER
