Twelfth edition. With an engraved frontispiece to each volume. A periodical or series of short papers, originally published on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 1750 to 1752, totaling two hundred and eight articles. Johnson made his periodical unique by using an elevated style of prose which differed from that of the time period and by discussing subjects such as morality, literature, society, politics, and religion. Written by Samuel Johnson, an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". CONDITION Bound in full tree calf. Externally, sound with light rubbing to the extremities with the odd small mark to the board. Light loss to the head and tail of the spines with cracks to the joints. Light fading to the spine and spine labels. Front hinge starting but firm to volumes one and two. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spotting and the odd small handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities with an ink stamp to the front endpaper of volume one. Previous owner's small bookplate to the front pastedown.
