It was especially important for trade with the Levant (parts of Turkey, Lebanon, Syria). The Maria Theresa Thaler became the best known and most popular silver coin in the Arabian world; and was the only silver coin that the Arabs trusted and would accept. The Thaler became the unofficial currency in some areas of Africa and Asia. After the death of Empress Maria Theresa in 1780, Joseph II permitted the Austrian mint to continue striking the coin with the 1780 dies to meet demand from the Middle East. These restrike coins were re-struck for trade purposes at Vienna, Austria with the 1780 date, but bear the S.F. marking below the bust, and an X after the 1780 date. Each Maria Thaler Silver Coin is .833 Fine Silver, and the inside is hollowed out of 2 separate coins with a thin lip to secure a picture inside the locket, with 4 small ball finials to display when open. Total weight 1 oz. or 28 grams, 1 5/8” diameter.
