Description: Today I offer out a quite rare example of art and history but with an unfortunate condition limitation. This is a fine original engraving created in 1764 by Francesco Bartolozzi, assisted by a drawing of Mr. Hufsey from the original painting created by Agostino Carraci. The work never was assigned a definitive written title but is generally accepted as "Jesus and the Woman Caught in Adultery. The scene depicts Jesus w/halo calmly addressing the questions of the vehement Pharisees who are pointing at both the Torah and the accused woman. The lower margin plate caption reads: Drawn by Mr. Hufsey from the Original Picture of Agostino Carraci in the Lampieri Palace at Bologna and Presented by him to The Earl of Northumberland in the Year 1737 Now in His Majesty's Collection. F. Bartolozzi Landini Sculp. To the best of my determination the landscape rectangular plate imagery is 40 cm x 31 cm, the plate markings are 43 cm x 36 cm, and the overall sheet is 47 cm x 37 cm. The ink coloration is what sets this original engraving plate stamp apart from the more widely published reproductions from the 1790 which were issued by John and Josiah Boydell in a definitive brown ink. I mention the condition limitations. The piece displays beautifully and the paper and ink are in excellent condition. The fault lays in someone's mistake many years prior to fold the artwork. As a result, although the paper lays completely flat, there is a fine vertical split offset to the right, but near the center. Obviously, you have the included photos to self-determine the degree that it effects presentation. Bartolozzi is one of the greatest engravers of his time. A founding member of the Royal Academy and a 40 year tenure as the official Engraver to the King. I listed Italy as the history of the art work due to the nationality of both Bartolozzi and Carraci, but, Bartolozzi created the bulk of his finest work while living in London so I should have listed that as well. This is an incredibly detailed and powerful engraving exquisitely created.
