Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE MODERN GAZETTEER OR A SHORT VIEW OF THE SEVERAL NATIONS OF THE WORLD by Mr. Salmon, and published by S & E. Ballard, London, 1759. Sixth edition. With a foldout map of the world entitled A New Map of the World drawn from the best authorities by Thomas Kitchin A New Map of the World Drawn from the Best Authorities, by Thomas Kitchin, 1759 (10.4 x 6.0"). This small, charming double-hemisphere world map shows country boundaries and some major rivers, but does not name any cities. The region east of the Mississippi is labelled British Empire. Louisiana Territory is identified, and the present-day American Southwest is New Mexico. Van Diemens Land is a single line floating in the ocean near to the rest of Australia, and New Zealand is the same - well before Captain Cook came and filled in the gaps. Fragments of coastline are identified north of the Antarctic Circle: Drakes Land; Terra Australis; and Cape Circumcision discover'd in 1739. The map is adorned with a decorative title cartouche. Containing, I. 'An introduction to Geography', II. 'The Situation and Extent of all the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Provinces, and Chief Towns, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America', III. 'The Produce, Manufactures, Trade, Constitution, Forces, Revenues, and Religion of the Feveral Countries', and IV. 'The Genealogies and Families of the Emperors, Kings, and Princes, now Reigning'. Bound in marble hardboards with a leather spine. Rubbing to boards, and heavy rubbing to to spine. Bumped and chipped to head and tail of spine. Rear joint is splitting and a lot of the leather has chipped. Binding pulling at the title page. Small pen inscription to title page, otherwise pages clean. This book is in fair overall condition.
