Description: This powder horn has geometrically inscribed designs around the horn. The discharge end is carved as well. The wooden butt end has a non-metallic .8" diameter thin button that is likely silver. The clasp is metallic as is the tack holding the button to the wood. The interesting thing is that the button is that of a man with a whig. To appropriately date the button we need to look at which presidents wore the whig. George Washington did not, but his peers and those prior did. George chose to dye his hair white and gathered it at the back. The next 4 presidents did wear the whig. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe as did their political peers. That era was from 1770's to 1825. Overall length of the horn is 8" and it is 1.7" diameter. There are two insect bore holes that do not go into the interior of the horn. There is some very old pitch in another area where likely another hole was period patched. Great, old, old piece.
