Description: 1689 Ireland Gun Money Shilling (XII Pence) "Nov:" Reverse, S-6581E, Withers Dies 9/9 PCGS AU58 Gun money was struck on bubbly planchets that were hastily cast from melted cannons. The typical example has weak strike, heavy bubbling, and at least some corrosion. The present example has the typical bubbling but the surfaces are a rich dark chocolate brown and glossy, with just the slightest evidence of rub on some of the highest tips. Claims to an MS grade, frankly. Two die cracks across the obverse. Very rare in this state of preservation and easily the nicest example we've seen for the grade level. The "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 is one of the biggest lies in World History. It is considered glorious because it was said to be bloodless. The Catholic King, James II, peacefully abdicated and allowed William and Mary to begin ruling with a more even hand and an ear toward Parliament rather than the Catholic Church. Actually, James II fled England and raised an army in Ireland. Desperate for funding, he melted down bronze cannons and, with the help of Irish mints, issued a fiat currency that was to be redeemed for silver when he regained the English thrown. An expensive proposition, he stipulated that the coins would be redeem gradually, in the month designated on the reverse. Following his defeat at the battle of Boyne in 1690, James II lost any true hope of repossessing the thrown and the tokens became worthless by the following year. Meanwhile, William was pondering what sort of punishment would rain down on Ireland for its support of open rebellion against England. Ultimately, an amnesty was declared. At least something about it was glorious. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE RETURN POLICY!
